Trail Highlights
Hike from Piedra del Fraile to Río Pollone
The rst part of the trail takes you along the Río Eléctrico valley, passing through lenga forests and wide glacial valleys. This section is relatively easy and scenic, offering great views of Cerro Fitz Roy and the surrounding mountains.
Ascent to Pollone Glacier Viewpoint
As you continue, the trail becomes steeper, leading you up toward the Pollone Glacier. Along this stretch, you’ll encounter rocky terrain and have spectacular views of Cerro Pollone and the glacier’s massive ice formations. This is a great spot for a break and to take in the expansive views
Climbing to Paso del Cuadrado
The nal ascent to Paso del Cuadrado is the most challenging part of the trek. The trail becomes steeper and rockier, and you may encounter snow or ice patches depending on the season. As you near the pass, you’ll be rewarded with unparalleled views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the Marconi Glacier, and the surrounding peaks. The sense of remoteness and the sheer scale of the landscape make the effort well worth it.
Paso del Cuadrado Summit
At the summit of Paso del Cuadrado (about 1,600 meters / 5,250 feet above sea level), you’ll have sweeping views of the Marconi Pass, the ice eld, and nearby peaks like Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. This is a perfect spot for a well deserved break and to absorb the beauty of the vast, glacial wilderness surrounding you.
Return Journey
After spending time at the summit, taking in the views and perhaps snapping some photos, you’ll begin the descent back to Piedra del Fraile. The return journey is much easier, though care should be taken on the rocky and sometimes slippery sections of the trail. The descent usually takes about half the time of the ascent.
