Laguna Capri: Fitz Roy views from the lakeshore
Laguna Capri sits above El Chaltén in Los Glaciares National Park. The trail climbs from the north end of town through lenga forest to the lake, where Fitz Roy rises above the far shore on clear days. It is a shorter option than Laguna de los Tres, with time to stop by the water before walking back.
The standard Laguna Capri hike is approximately 8 km round trip, takes 3 to 5 hours and gains about 400 m in elevation. It is a moderate hike, with most of the climbing near the start. Allow extra time to reach the trailhead from your accommodation and for longer photo stops.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours and descending on uneven ground. If you are bringing children, tell us about the walks they have done before. We can help you decide whether Capri suits your family.

The Fitz Roy trailhead
The walk starts at the end of Avenida San Martín, at the north end of El Chaltén. You can reach the trailhead on foot. We confirm where to meet your guide before the hike.
Río de las Vueltas viewpoint
The first stretch is the steepest part of the walk. The trail climbs above the river valley to a viewpoint where you can stop for a rest and photographs.
Through the lenga forest
The slope eases higher up. At the signed junction, take the Laguna Capri branch through the trees. The other branch heads toward the Fitz Roy viewpoint and Laguna de los Tres. Stay on the marked trail.
The shore of Laguna Capri
The trail drops toward the lake, with Fitz Roy across the water when visibility allows. Stop on the established lakeshore for a snack or photographs. On windy days, the trees offer a more sheltered place to rest.
The walk back to town
Return by the same trail, leaving enough daylight and energy for the descent. If you would like to include another viewpoint, discuss it with your guide. It depends on your pace and the conditions that day.
Laguna Capri or Laguna de los Tres?
Choose Capri for a shorter walk to forest and lake views. Choose Los Tres when you want to get closer to Fitz Roy and are ready for a longer day with a steep final ascent.

The Fitz Roy trail network continues beyond the Capri area toward Poincenot and Los Tres. That is a longer itinerary, not an automatic extension of this guided hike. Laguna Torre is a separate hike in another valley.

Weather at the lake
The forest can feel sheltered while strong wind blows across the lake. Fitz Roy may be in cloud even when it is sunny in town. Your guide may turn the group back if the weather worsens or anyone is struggling with the walk.

Snow, ice and trail access
Seasonal snow and ice can make the climb and descent harder and slower. Check current conditions with the park's visitor center, including closures and any registration requirement for your dates. Traction equipment may be needed; ask us what is appropriate before setting out.
Forest shelter does not remove the risk of falling branches in strong wind. Be ready to change the plan if the trail or forecast makes the outing unsuitable.

You do not need a transfer for the standard town trailhead. Allow extra walking time from your accommodation. If you are arriving from El Calafate that day, tell us your arrival time before choosing a hiking plan.
Bring your own food and water unless your booking specifically includes them. Confirm any equipment you need when arranging the outing.

The Laguna Capri trail is in the park's northern zone, where admission charges apply. Check your visitor category, exemptions, current rates and ticket instructions before your hike. Park admission is separate from guiding unless your booking confirmation says otherwise.

From the lakeshore, you can photograph Fitz Roy with the water and forest in the foreground. Tell us if photography is your main reason for coming so we can allow more time at the lake.
A sunrise visit means walking in the dark and depends on suitable trail conditions. Clouds can hide the peaks at any time of day.

Do I need a guide for Laguna Capri?
In normal open-trail conditions, Laguna Capri can be walked independently; a guide is not generally required for the standard route. Check current park rules and access conditions for your dates. A guide adds local context, help with pacing and equipment choices, and judgment about the weather and turnaround.
Is it a good hike for children or beginners?
It can be, provided everyone is comfortable with the initial climb, uneven ground and the return descent. It is not a flat lakeside stroll. Tell us the children's ages, your walking experience and any mobility concerns so we can discuss whether Capri fits your group.
Will we see Fitz Roy?
Laguna Capri offers views of Fitz Roy across the lake on clear days. Clouds can hide the peaks. We can help you compare the forecast for your dates in El Chaltén, but we cannot promise clear views.
